Title: Advancing Desalination Technologies: From Seawater Desalination To Ultrapure-water Production
Bio: Dr. Seungkwan (SK) Hong is a professor in the School of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering at Korea University (KU). He is also a dean of Graduate School of Energy and Environment, which was established and supported by KU and KIST (Korean Institute of Science and Technology). He obtained Ph.D. degree in Civil engineering from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1996. Before joining Korea University in 2003, he served as an assistant professor in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Central Florida (UCF), USA (1997~2003). His primary research involves the development of membrane technologies for drinking water treatment, seawater desalination, water reuse, and industrial processes such as ultrapure water production and shale oil/gas produced water treatment as well as electrochemical water treatment technologies. He has (co)authored more than 190 academic papers published in internationally renowned journals (h-index: 61 (Google) and 54 (Scopus) with more than 15,900 and 12,000 citations). With the broad experiences in the related field, he successfully perfectly served as a director of Korean Optimized Reverse osmosis membrane-based desalination integrated with Advanced Energy saving (KORAE) research project (research fund: 36.8 million US dollar, 2016-2022). In addition to his research work, he has actively participated in various academic societies. Professor Hong is a representative of IWA Korean National Committee, a vice president of KSWE (Korean Society of Environmental Engineers) and KMS (Korean Membrane Society). He also served as an Editor of Journal of Membrane Science, Associate Editors of Desalination and Water Treatment, and a member of Editorial Board of Desalination.

Title: From the Linear to the Circular Urban Water Cycle: From Disposal to Resource Recovery
Bio: William Mitch is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. He has studied disinfection byproduct formation mechanisms over the past 20 years, with a particular focus on nitrosamines. His research focuses on conventional drinking water and potable reuse, including MF/RO/AOP systems, O3/BAC-based systems, advanced oxidation processes and treatment of RO concentrate. He has evaluated techniques to minimize the formation of disinfection byproducts. He obtained a BA in Archaeology from Harvard University and MS and PhD degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He received the 2004 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award from the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors and Parsons Engineering, and a NSF Career Award in 2007. He served as the Chair of the 2017 Disinfection Byproducts Gordon Conference. He has received research funding from the National Science Foundation, the Water Research Foundation, and the United State Department of Agriculture. He has served on the EPA’s Scientific Advisory Panel’s Drinking Water Committee and on National Water Research Institute expert panels evaluating potable reuse projects for the Las Virgenes-Triunfo drinking water plant and the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego. He holds a PE license in California.

Title: Climate Resilient Urban Nexus: Operationalizing the Food-Water-Energy Nexus and Taiwan Urban Living Lab
Bio: Dr. Shang-Lien Lo is a Distinguished Professor of the Graduate Institute of Environmental Engineering at National Taiwan University (NTU). He graduated from NTU in 1975 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and entered the graduate program at NTU to receive his M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering (1983). Upon graduation, he became an associate professor at NTU. He then conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University from 1985-1987 and received tenure at NTU in 1989. He was the Director of Graduate Institute of Environmental Engineering at NTU during 1996 – 2002. He has contributed greatly to the establishing curricular programs and course syllabi of fields of environmental planning and management during this period. Professor Lo has made long term and significant contributions in water and environmental research and engineering, especially in water resources and water quality treatment, decomposition of chlorinated and perfluorinated compounds, treatment of wastewater and heavy metal-containing sludge, microwave pyrolysis of biomass waste, and environment and ecosystem management. Prof Lo’s research achievement has been receiving many academic honors, including Outstanding Research Award and Distinguished Research Medal from NSC; Outstanding Engineering Professor Medal; Ho Chin Tui Outstanding Env. Technology Prize; ICCE Fellow; CICHE Fellow; Y.Z. Hsu Scientific Chair Professor; Environmental Protection Medal, Taiwan EPA; IWA Distinguished Fellow; TECO Technology Award; BCEEM; D.WRE; ASCE Fellow; IETI Distinguished Fellow and Academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
